Willie Sutton

Another book about Willie Sutton; Willie is a favorite of mine because he was 3 years younger than my grandfather and they both grew up in “Irishtown.” This neighborhood originally named Vinegar Hill and is now named Dumbo/Vinegar Hill. When it out grew the boundaries of Vinegar Hill, it started to be called Irishtown; basically it encompassed all of what is called now Dumbo and much of Downtown Brooklyn. Back then, early 1900s, with no refrigeration cattle were driven in herds like in the West through Irishtown, so New York City would have fresh meat. Willie later entered my grandfather’s life again when he robbed a bank in Sunnyside, Queens around the corner from my grandparents apartment.
